Learning Step by Step in Time

A song appeared during our ETH DRRS field design trip in Norway.

It came first as atmosphere — somewhere between midsummer light, tribal mixes, outdoor pizza, fjord air, and a group slowly becoming a learning field.

A few days later, after a cold night near Arne Næss’ Tvergastein hut on the Hardangervidda plateau, I listened to it again while hiking down through snow patches, wet salix, mud, stone, water, low clouds, and silence.

Then it changed.

The song became pace.
The terrain became rhythm.
The body became a way of knowing.

Step by Step in Time suddenly held something essential about DRRS: regenerative learning does not emerge from rushing faster into complexity. It asks us to slow down enough to sense what is actually there — weather, group energy, risk, fatigue, beauty, trace, relation, and the quiet intelligence of the landscape.

Later, the story folded once more. The song seemed to be an AI-generated blues artefact: emotionally powerful, aesthetically convincing, yet with unclear authorship, provenance, and cultural trace.

That made the experience even sharper.

Because in regenerative systems work, resonance is only the beginning. We also need to ask: Where does this come from? Who or what is hidden behind it? What enters us through platforms, voices, images, landscapes, bodies, and moods? What do we carry onward after an experience has moved through us?

I wrote this article as a more poetic, embodied, and reflective entry into the DRRS pedagogy — through field design, Deep Ecology, Leave (No) Trace, systems sensing, organic emergence, and the strange companionship of a disappearing song.

It is one way to understand what our DRRS experiences try to open: learning paths that complement cognitive frameworks with movement, perception, emotion, place, uncertainty, and lived relation.
